Underwater: What disappointed fans most about the movie
By Sandy C.
Despite the underwhelming trailer and bad rep movies get this month, I tried to enjoy Underwater. But the many disappointments quickly sank all optimism. Here’s what moviegoers are most upset about.
Though Underwater didn’t do as bad as Like A Boss with critics over at Rotten Tomatoes, it still received a rotten score of 53%, with less than half of watchers agreeing that the movie is not worth watching. Walking out of the screening, I had mixed feelings about it. After sitting with my thoughts for a while, I have to say this movie is not as bad as some reviews say, but works better as a movie you can stream from home than one you pay to watch in theaters.
Underwater follows a small crew of researchers who find themselves trapped after an unknown creature attacks their subterranean laboratory. It stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., and others.

I must say, the movie does have its strong points. Those who are afraid of tight spaces or swimming in deep water will definitely feel fear and anxiety. The movie is a huge trigger for those suffering with claustrophobia. Even I was nervous, and I’m not generally afraid of small rooms.

The mystery of the underwater creatures also kept me interested…for about 30 minutes. After that, the movie drags on too much without delivering any action so I found myself out of patience. When audiences to get a glimpse of the monsters, it’s simply not as interesting.
It also doesn’t help that we are never offered any explanation or backstory of what is hunting them down. This is what I, and most moviegoers, found the most disappointing.
Spoilers ahead!
The crew first finds a baby monster that they are able to kill rather easily. Then, bigger versions of that creature appear and surround their ship. Finally, an enormous monster shows himself (herself?) and it reminds me of the Cloverfield alien. He is more clever than the rest and appears to either be able to control them all or they are all loyal to him.
Throughout the movie, we see quick glimpses and hints that one of the characters may have known about these creatures, or at least heard about them in stories, but they never say a thing or confirm it to audiences. We’re left wondering what they are and if they’ll return.
On one hand, I suppose the mystery is good, but leaving fans with questions only works when the story is done well. And, in this case, it wasn’t and viewers are not interested. But don’t take my word for it! What did you think of the movie?
Underwater is now playing in theaters.
