Lifetime kicks off its “Ripped from Headlines” slate with the Kamiyah Mobley story. Stolen by My Mother stars Niecy Nash in the leading role.

Imagine living your entire life with someone you believe is your mother, only to discover that person kidnapped you when you were only a few hours old and then raised as you as their own until finally revealing what they had done. Kamiyah Mobley doesn’t have to wonder, because that was her story as depicted in Lifetime’s Stolen by My Mother.

The movie is the first in the network’s latest “Ripped from Headlines” line-up and stars Niecy Nash and T’Rhonda Jones as the dueling mothers. The following list notes the best scenes in the movie.

4. Gloria kidnaps Kamiyah.

The beginning of the movie sets the tone for the story of Kamiyah Mobley’s tragic tale. Nash excels at the emotional portrayal of Gloria Williams. We understand that she felt traumatized by her miscarriage and her abusive relationship.

It doesn’t justify what she did, but the opening sequence showing Gloria making the decision to kidnap Kamiyah is poignantly executed. The moment Shanara (Jones) realizes that her daughter is gone, it truly breaks your heart.

3. Gloria confesses the truth to her daughter.

After a nice day out celebrating Kamiyah’s birthday, Gloria decides to confess the truth about her kidnapping. Kamiyah had wanted to take a waitressing job at their favorite restaurant, but to do so she would need to show them her social security card, something Kamiyah doesn’t have considering her abduction.

Instead of lying again, Gloria tells her she can’t take the job and explains why. It’s a tough moment for the pair, particularly Kamiyah, whose entire world is turned upside down upon hearing the news. The scene sets the rest of the film in motion as Kamiyah’s birth mother learns about her daughter and fights to get her back.

2. Shanara takes the witness stand.

During Gloria’s trial, Kamiyah’s birth mother takes the stand to say what sentence she thinks Gloria should receive for kidnapping her daughter. It’s difficult to watch her talk about her struggles reconnecting with her child. She states that she wants Gloria sentenced to death for stealing her baby. Jones does a fantastic job of conveying the emotional nuances of the scene. It’s an impossible situation.

Obviously she is frustrated that her kid doesn’t feel as connected to her as she does her kidnapper, but she also doesn’t want to push her daughter away so soon after just getting her back. That said, she only sees Gloria as a villain, while Kamiyah sees her as her mom.

1. The final scene of the movie.

In the final scene of the film, Kamiyah is seen communicating with Gloria while she’s imprisoned. Despite everything that happened Kamiyah always maintained that Gloria was her mother, even while forging a new relationship with her biological family.

The real Kamiyah is still in communication with Gloria, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for kidnapping Shanara’s child. She even willingly goes by two different names depending on which family she’s with, it’s a complicated life she leads.
