The Resident saw a tick up, while Emergence fell once more. Here’s a look at the Tuesday TV ratings for Jan. 21 and what they could mean.

There was a lot going on in the world of TV on Jan. 21. Every network aired new episodes of their shows, which meant there was plenty of competition. How would the shows fare in the Tuesday TV ratings?

As I mentioned in my Jan. 20 ratings piece, I’m not going to focus too much on the shows we already know are being renewed. So, despite the 13% drop in the demo for New Amsterdam, there’s nothing to worry about because the show has been renewed for three seasons.

The only show not to worry about that I want to focus on first is Arrow, which aired its backdoor pilot starring Katie Cassidy Rodgers, Juliana Harkavy, and Katherine McNamara. The episode did see a big tick down from the previous episode, but that was the Crisis on Infinite Earths episode, so technically doesn’t count.

As it’s a backdoor pilot, we’d hope to see healthy views to show that the series is viable. I’ll compare with the last routine episode of Arrow instead. The backdoor pilot was steady in the demo and up by almost 0.1 million in the audience. It’s actually the highest audience of the season when you take out the crossover episode, which is a positive sign.

Is it good enough? That I’m not sure. Supernatural‘s Wayward Sisters backdoor pilot saw some excellent TV ratings but wasn’t picked up to series because the CW didn’t think it would be viable. We’re still on the edge about Arrow‘s.

As for the other shows, there were some mixed results. For FOX, it was mostly positive. The Resident (which certainly saw Conrad get his groove back) ticked up 1% in both the demo and audience. The question is whether this is enough to save the series. 24 Hours to Hell and Back was steady in the audience and up in the demo by 10%, suggesting it will likely be safe for another season.

“Hairtrigger” – When a young man is traumatized by his experience surviving a mass shooting, and radicalized into an anti-government terrorist, the team must act quickly to track him down before he can exact revenge on those he believes failed him, on FBI: MOST WANTED, Tuesday, Jan. 21 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. CBS had a mostly positive night with its TV crime dramasNCIS was steady in the demo and up in the audience. FBI was up in both demo and audience. FBI: Most Wanted did tick down in the demo but was steady in the audience. All three shows are likely safe. FBI: Most Wanted is the one to worry the most about, but it’s performing well in the timeslot despite the demo downward tick.

ABC had the worst night of the lot. The Conners ticked down, but I doubt this is an issue. It’s the highest-rated comedy for the network, so will likely be renewed. Bless This Mess saw a tick down, but it’s been a relatively strong performer throughout the season.

mixed-ish saw the biggest fall outside of The CW (doesn’t count with the episodes coming off the back of Crisis). It lost 28% of its demo and 35% of its total audience, which is worrying. However, I’m most concerned about black-ish, which also lost in both metrics.

Bless This Mess and mixed-ish do sit in the top half of shows on the network. Considering Modern Family is ending this season, the two comedies will be needed to keep that sort of lineup for the network. However, black-ish has dropped into the bottom half in terms of live ratings.

Another series I don’t think is going to be renewed is Emergence. It fell once more, and this time the audience dropped below the two million mark. It’s the lowest-performing show outside the two that are confirmed to be ending, so that certainly puts it in the firing line. We’ll have to see how the finale performs next week.
