Taiwan’s newest fantasy horror show The Ghost Bride is now streaming on Netflix, with a bone-chilling take on holy matrimony.
Co-directed by Malaysian directors Quek Shio-chuan and Ho Yu-hang, The Ghost Bride is now streaming on Netflix and chilling us to the bone with its unholy take on holy–or ghostly–matrimony.
Not to be confused with Chito S. Roño’s 2017 Filipino film by the same name, Netflix’s newest foreign horror stars Huang Peijia, Wu Kang-jen, Ludi Lin and Kuang Tian, following the adventures of a young woman named Pan Li Lan (Peijia) who makes a deal with the malicious ghost Lim Tian Ching (Tian).
Ching is the son of a wealthy family, who was mysteriously poisoned, though everyone was under the impression he died of sickness. After a Lim family member proposes that Lan marry into their family for stability during a party thrown only weeks after Ching’s death, Lan’s parents believe their daughter’s engagement will be to her childhood friend Lim Tian Bai (Lin).
But the Lim family has other plans and hopes to betroth Lan to their deceased son Ching. At the same time, Lan’s father contracts a devilish illness and his tormented soul is taken into the afterlife. The ghost of Ching, bent on getting revenge for his murder, appears before Lan and tells her that she has ten days to return her father’s soul to his body, or else he will die “for real.” Lan agrees to help Chang get his revenge in exchange for him helping to save Lan’s father.
But Shio-chuan’s and Yu-hang’s thriller isn’t all about creepy marriage proposals and death. As Lan searches for her father’s soul and a way to save him, she uncovers dramatic secrets within the Lim family and meets a 500-year-old, but handsome, “Heavenly Guard” named Er Lang (Kang-jen) who seeks to help Lan in her efforts.
The Ghost Bride takes a surprising turn into themes recognized in Japanese “Reverse Harem,” where a young woman becomes tangled in a romantic web with not one, not two, but three men. In this case, Ching, Lang, and Bai all begin to pursue Lan with marriage on the mind.
On top of the surprisingly romantic, yet still very horrific, plot, The Ghost Bride also has gorgeous cinematography which follows this epic adventure for six hour-long episodes.
The Ghost Bride is now streaming on Netflix. Binge it here!
