Animal Kingdom Season 5 recently began filming and the Codys are back in action. But can we expect to see Smurf’s story continued when the series returns?

Animal Kingdom Season 4 came to a shocking conclusion last year when Smurf facilitated a shoot-out between members of her old crew and her sons, a heist we can assume was meant to be a suicide mission for the matriarch of the Cody family. But when she survived the gunfire and challenged her oldest son to shoot her himself, it was her grandson J who ended her life and her reign over the Cody family business. But just because Smurf died at the end of last season doesn’t mean we won’t continue to see the story of her character unfold.

Throughout last season, a parallel storyline taking place in the 1970s revealed to audiences how Smurf came to be both an experienced robber and a mom. And it’s been confirmed that the story of Smurf’s life will continue in Animal Kingdom Season 5, with Leila George staying on as the leader of the Codys in the past.

What piques our interest the most here is that executive producer John Wells explained we’d catch up with the “past Codys” a few years after the birth of Pope and Julia.

And while we’re certain we’ll see more of how Smurf continued to balance heists, motherhood, and building her property management business to launder her money, we’re curious to know if this means we’ll also see Pope and Julia as children in the flashbacks.

The Cody brothers frequently bring up memories and anecdotes of what their childhoods were like — whether it was training to join their mom’s heist crew, surviving while Smurf was out (or home) partying for days, or trouble they ran into navigating life in Oceanside. It would be especially interesting to see the parallel jumps from Pope and Craig as children to where they are now in the “kingdom.”

Animal Kingdom Season 5 began filming two weeks ago, and though we know George was included in the table read for the premiere episode, we haven’t seen too many clues yet about what’s in store for the 1970s/80s storyline on the upcoming season.

Could we see Julia and Pope looking out for each other when things get tense at home (or on their first robbery)? Would Smurf be pregnant with Craig? Could we even potentially see what happened when the family took in a 12-year old Baz?
