A total trainwreck or the family film we’ve all been waiting for? SEGA fans can finally cast their votes with Sonic The Hedgehog now playing in theatres.

Last April, the trailer for Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog sparked ample disapproval from long-time fans of the video game. Fans were “creeped” by Sonic’s perhaps-a-little-too-realistic look. The teeth, the eyes…there was very little people liked in the film character’s first-look. So, Paramount took three extra months to bring Sonic the life he deserved, and now the time has come to see the lightning-fast hero in all his furry blue glory. Sonic the Hedgehog is now playing in theatres–will you be watching?

Based off the popular video game by SEGA, Sonic The Hedgehog, directed by Jeff Fowler, follows the “little ball of super energy in an extremely handsome package” as Sonic (Ben Schwartz) leaves his home planet for Earth to escape all the people trying to steal his power. Leading a fun, albeit lonely, life on earth, Sonic accidentally causes a massive power outage that draws the attention of–you guessed it–Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey.

Eliciting the help of Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), Sonic and his new friend embark on a road trip to escape the clutches of the mad scientist doctor and his tiny laser robots.

While the film’s first trailer might have gotten the story’s reputation off to a rocky start,  Sonic’s new look is likely to get film-goers and long-time fans in a nostalgic mood.

Also starring Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Sonic the Hedgehog will likely have its viewers living in a gamer’s paradise with the iconic scenes of the red-sneaker-sporting, white-glove-wearing hedgehog rolling through the city streets, collecting gold rings and making anything and everything go “boom.”

The cinematography by Fast & Furious‘ Stephen F. Windon gives the films more explosive, action-packed parts a bit of an edge, adding to the coolness of Sonic’s slick moves. Plus, everything is just so…flourescent! If the creators were trying to achieve a cartooned, live-action vibe, they nailed it.

Many critics are already giving Sonic The Hedgehog electric thumbs up for being not only a stellar kids film and enjoyable comedy brought to fruition with the incomparable Carrey, but also for the top-class reimagining of a favorite 90s video game. Sonic The Hedgehog invites long-time players to re-explore the world of Sonic from the comfort of their reclining movie theatre seats and take another (metaphorical) run with their favorite hedgehog.
