Carina DeLuca may have a found a new love interest in the Grey’s Anatomy universe, and I am here for it. But how long will this storyline last?

Spoiler alert: Be sure you’re caught up on Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy before reading!

Carina DeLuca arrived to Seattle in Grey’s Anatomy Season 14, but she’s yet to be featured in her own prominent storyline. We can’t be completely surprised considering Stefania Spampinato has remained in a guest role since her debut.

Being limited to a recurring role hasn’t stopped docs from being utilized regularly in the past. However, it’s apparent the writers have lacked a direction for Carina recently outside of being Andrew’s sister and the reason why Amelia discovered her tumor and the length of her pregnancy. We also can’t forget she was a short-term love interest for Arizona and Owen during her first season.

Many fans have wondered for a while, will Carina ever be more than a side character who is just there to help advance other storylines? It seems Krista Vernoff and her writing team has found a new way to explore Carina’s potential even though romance will be involved once again.

As we saw on Station 19 Season 3, Episode 5, Carina found herself rubbing elbows with new captain Maya Bishop at Joe’s Bar. Fans who remembered their respective history with women likely let out a scream to express how fast they “shipped” the unexpected duo. (I know I did.)

Here we have two bisexual women, from what we gather, working in the emergency service field in Seattle. What could possibly go wrong?

Not only am 100% on board for the sparks that are flying, but I think this crossover relationship is just what the characters need. Station 19 has turned Maya into an unbearable leader to start Season 3, so I’m glad Carina has now entered her life to hopefully relieve tensions at the fire station.

We’ve seen how seductive Carina can be, which makes me wonder how much of a distraction she could be when it comes to Maya’s responsibilities. After all, Maya’s budding sexuality as a teenager interfered with her track career and relationship with her father. Will history repeat itself now that Maya has reached the top?

On the flip side, I’m hopeful this storyline will allow fans the chance to get to know Carina even more. We know that she’ll continue recurring on Station 19 for at least a couple more episodes. Perhaps a date or two at Joe’s Bar, or even an unexpected fire station hookup, will be enough to shed more light on their lives as they get to know each other.

As I alluded to earlier, Carina’s previous flings proved to be short-lived, so of course, I have my fears for how long this storyline with Maya will play out. Luckily Grey’s Anatomy now has this bonus hour of sorts to explore new stories with characters who have struggled to find adequate screen time. My fingers are crossed for more Carina DeLuca on both shows.
