Amy and Jonah’s relationship has been peacefully stagnant for most of Season 5. When will Superstore take the couple to the next level?

In the latest episode of Superstore, the Cloud 9 crew organizes a community service event with the intention of giving underprivileged women care packages. The store accepts monetary donations by asking customers to round-up to the nearest dollar on each transaction. While Amy deals with getting profiled for Zephra’s website and a scandal involving the care packages, Jonah throws on the charm and lightly flirts with female customers to ensure they will round-up.

Sandra, a newlywed well versed in the intricacies of long-term relationships, calls Jonah out on supposedly betraying his relationship with Amy. Obviously, Jonah’s flirting was harmless (and Amy wouldn’t care), but Sandra’s frustration got us thinking about Amy and Jonah. For the majority of Season 5 of Superstore, their relationship hasn’t even been a blip on the radar, no boats rocked nor major milestones met. Aren’t they overdue to level up in their relationship?

Since Sandra’s wedding brought the romance and chaos mere weeks ago, Superstore doesn’t need to rush into another wedding. (And Cloud 9 can really only handle a wedding every two or so years.) An engagement wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility, but when aging sitcoms start to slowly finalize their endgame central couple, stories tend to get stale. Entire seasons are devoted to the ins and outs of wedding planning, and it’s something we have all seen before.

But Amy and Jonah deserve something new. Maybe that something new could be a baby. The series wrote America Ferrera’s pregnancy into the narrative in Seasons 3 and 4, and although lightning rarely strikes twice on TV shows, writing Ferrera’s second pregnancy into the series could prove a compelling catalyst. Sitcoms have relied on unexpected pregnancies for sweeps since the dawn of time, but Amy and Jonah’s case would be unique.

Amy already has two children, which Jonah more than likely bumblingly step-parents in his own adorable way, but Jonah isn’t officially a parent. And since Jonah’s always looking to be the voice for a cause, Superstore could tackle paternity leave and the dynamic shift this next step in Amy and Jonah’s relationship would cause. As of Season 5, Episode 17, Ferrera’s pregnancy hasn’t been written in, though you have to admit, the potential is there to explore through Season 6.

Even if Superstore doesn’t go the baby route for Amy and Jonah, we’re getting hungry for some forward momentum. We have to admit: A healthy, uneventful partnership isn’t what we’re accustomed to getting from a sitcom, in spite of it being much more realistic to the alternative. Still, Amy and Jonah are the heart of the series, and we’re ready to jump to the next level with them whenever they are. Let’s just hope that’s sooner rather than later.
