The latest episode of My Hero Academia sees Class 1-A further preparing for the school festival and Eri being introduced to the campus.

This week, I’d like to roast my friend that I watch anime with. Through his deranged calculations, he has determined that the last few episodes of My Hero Academia have been “absolutely terrible.” He proclaimed that nothing has actually happened and that he “needs more death” in order to be entertained. Aside from Episode 79, this sentiment is unfair.

My fellow anime lovers, it’s important you embrace stretches like this—ones that aren’t blockbusters but are certainly not filler—in order to build up your excitement when things truly start kicking off. That is what we in the business call “pacing” and I hope my friend grows to understand that. He is a filthy wretch on this earth, I tell you. Now, let’s get into this week’s episode.

Winners

Kyoka Jiro/Earphone Jack

I roasted my nameless friend in the introduction for his trifling, so now it is only fair that I roast myself. It seems that, in my quest to hastily conquer the world, I forgot to mention Jiro in the winner’s section for last week. She literally had a solo singing moment that left the class absolutely shaken with amazement like she was Adelle.

On a side note: it’s actually unintentionally hilarious to hear her sing in English when you’re watching the subbed version. Well, maybe not hilarious, but still amusing. But what can you do?

Mirio Togata/Lemillion

More from Streaming

After his joke from Episode 81 felt like something you get canceled over (although I do admit I probably overreacted as I have many times with elements of My Hero Academia humor), Mirio came back this week with an unexpectedly ridiculous moment when he attempted to surprise everyone by referring to his butt as a peach.

Is Mirio Togota on Twitter? Is he that in tune with the internet’s emoji vernacular? Is this some sort of shout out to the horny areas of Twitter? The answer to all of those, in my expert opinion, is yes.

Famous pop culture references

My Hero Academia was feeling itself this week; I truly can’t help but respect it. There’s a moment in which one of the students from the rival class boasts about how they’re putting on a production titled “Romeo and Juliet and the Prisoner of Azkaban: The Return of the King.” I appreciated the Harry Potter reference especially since Azkaban is my favorite movie in the series and one of my 10 favorite movies of all-time.

Principal Nezu

Personally, my times in the educational system were incredibly solid. Did I get along with all of my teachers? I did not, but I was more fortunate than far too many kids that weren’t, so every now and then I like seeing moments in pop culture where teachers and faculty embody the wholesomeness of caring about their students.

This paragraph goes out to Principal Nezu, who not only scarfs down cheese like he’s Pac-Man eating power pellets but shows an unflinching desire to serve his students. He fought to have the school festival be a thing, and he deserves a salute for it.

Losers

Minoru Mineta/Grape Juice

The ole’ standby rears his ugly, grape-infested head once again. This time, however, it might be the last time. For as much as I hate Mineta and consider him a real hindrance on the show for his painfully unfunny and perverted remarks, the bit is getting old.

There have been some weeks when I’ve excoriated My Hero Academia in an effort to simply have something to talk about. That’s not exactly fair, even for someone as deserving as the grape boy.

Anime has these types of characters and issues of potential misogynistic commentary all over, so critiquing it week after week feels somewhat boring and overly preachy. I don’t want to be preachy all the time; this isn’t an Aaron Sorkin series or Dear White People. I hereby declare this the last week Mineta makes the loser’s list due to perverted behavior. You know why I hate him, and I hope you understand and even appreciate that.

It looks like next week’s episode is set to be an exciting one the tease of Midoriya coming face-to-face with Gentle Criminal. Will we find out just how powerful he is and how Midoriya stacks up? Will we continue to see Bakugo, Jiro, and Ashido be musical-performance superstars? I can’t wait to find out.
