The Resident and New Amsterdam both have superbug storylines coming up. Neither of them have anything to do with the current situation.

Sometimes life imitates art. Sometimes art imitates life. And there are times that life and art have the exact same situation at the exact same time. The latter is the case for The Resident and New Amsterdam‘s upcoming storylines.

As the world deals with the novel coronavirus, The Resident introduced a superbug storyline at the end of the previous episode. Then just hours later, the promo for New Amsterdam showed that the next new episode will have some sort of superbug in the hospital. It’s a scary time, and it’s normal to wonder whether TV shows are using current situations as a way to gain more viewers.

Let me tell you that neither of these storylines have been written because of the novel coronavirus. While the situation started a couple of months ago in China, the New Amsterdam and The Resident storylines will have been planned and written much further in advance. They were filmed months ago, with production on both shows shutting down as they film their final couple of episodes each.

The episodes we’re seeing are a reminder that superbugs happen. And they can be extremely shocking to deal with. People panic, hospital workers have to work overtime to fight the infection and try not to get it themselves. We’ll get to see just how quickly and easily a virus or a superbug can spread.

At the end of The Resident, Cain was warned that something like this could completely shut down the hospital. All those who have been close to Patient Zero (and Dawn Long will become known) are at risk of being infected. There’s a chance Nic and Devon will end up ill, along with those who were cleaning the beds ready for the next patient and the janitor who moved the hospital equipment in the storage room—whoever uses that equipment next will be at risk.

New Amsterdam hasn’t started the story yet. The episode will air on Apr. 7. I’ll be interested in seeing whether it actually airs as planned, and I think that will depend on the current situation. If it’s gotten worse by April, I wonder if NBC will choose to preempt the episode until afterward out of empathy and consideration for those who are dealing with loved ones who are suffering from COVID-19.

The episodes are going to be important, though. Not only will they show us how easily these superbugs spread, but they will show us the hard work our frontline staff is working. We’ll get a look at what the doctors and nurses are currently dealing with as more people head to hospitals requiring testing.

So, while the episodes aren’t because of the novel coronavirus, they’re extremely timely. They’re going to be episodes of The Resident and New Amsterdam everyone needs to watch.
