5. Jack’s back

Well, we knew Supernatural brought back our little buddy. But now he’s back home in the bunker and we get to see him in honest situations with the guys. My favorite element of this is that we know that Jack is his old self, as much as can be expected after months in the Empty.

He did a little personal tour, touching the MW for Mary Winchester, carved into the wood alongside Sam’s and Dean’s own initials. He was somber and hasn’t forgotten or forgiven himself for what happened that day.

On a side note, I still don’t know if she actually died or just went “away,” like Becky and her family. We’ll see about that eventually, I’m sure. But Jack does believe she’s gone and he holds himself responsible. This reminder is also a good setup for the decision he makes later. Jack and his guilt. Classic.

He visits his old room, has a talk with Sam, and clearly the guys are genuinely happy to have him back. Especially Castiel, who is simply over the moon that his little nephilim is going to get to live up to his destiny, just like he always believed he would. Happiness all around, sort of.

But it doesn’t take long at all before Jack’s guilt really does start playing tricks on his brain. He never has been able to resist the urge to do good deeds and use the old, “I just wanted to help.” I’m really glad that this was the thing that made him defy his orders not to use his powers. It was only a matter of time, but finally, he really did get to help.
