2. The Wind Rises

Original Release Date:  July 20, 2013 (Japan), February 21, 2014 (USA)

Box Office Earnings: The Wind Rises was filmed with an estimated budget of $30,000,000. On opening weekend in the USA, the film earned $313,751 and earned a gross of $5,209,580 in the USA. The Wind Rises‘ cumulative worldwide gross was $136,454,220.

Critical Acclaim: The Wind Rises was oscar-nominated in 2014 for Best Animated Film of the Year and the cast (Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and John Krasinsky) were nominate for the BTVA Anime Dub Movie/Special Voice Acting Award for Best Vocal Ensemble in an Anime Feature Film/Special. The Wind Rises was also the winner of both an Annie Award and Awards of the Japanese Academy for Best Animated Film.

About the Role: Based on a true story, The Wind Rises takes a personal dive into the life of Japanese artist and engineer Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the first Japanese fighter plans during World War II. Gordon-Levitt voices Jiro in the English dubbed version of this Studio Ghibli masterpiece alongside Emily Blunt, who plays Jiro’s wife in her battle with tuberculosis, and John Krasinski who voices for one of Jiro’s best friends and fellow engineer Honjo.

Simply the Best: Voice acting is a hard enough job, having to express as much emotion as possible with just your voice, rather than using facial expressions on-screen. Tougher still is those who have to voice act for films that were originally made in another language.

Aside from Gordon-Levitt’s awesome acting ability to take on a historic engineer and loving husband, what also might have helped his voice acting for Jiro is the fact that Jiro’s character has the same calm and level-headed personality has many of Gordon-Levitt’s on-screen characters. If a live-action ever gets made of The Wind Rises, it’s easy to know who should be cast in the lead, and maybe we’d have to update our list of best Joseph Gordon-Levitt movies.
