5. Treasure Planet

Original Release Date: November 27, 2002

Box Office Earnings: Treasure Planet was filmed with an estimated budget of $140,000,000. On opening weekend in the USA, the film earned $12,083,248 and earned a gross of $38,176,783 in the USA. Treasure Planet‘s cumulative worldwide gross was $110,041,363.

Critical Acclaim: Treasure Planet was Oscar-nominated in 2003 for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for the USA Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films award for Best Animated Feature. Treasure Planet also won the Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in Animated Features.

About the Role: A 21-year-old Levitt voices for the character of Jim Hawkins in this galactic retelling of the famous story Treasure Island. The story is pretty much the same, except that ships fly in outer space instead of sail on the ocean and there are corrupt cyborgs and aliens to fight instead of pirates.

Simply the Best: Treasure Planet was a film ahead of its time, with out-of-this-world animation that was already hitting Japanese markets but proved unpopular in the states. The combination of 3D animation with 2D animation was a masterpiece the world just wasn’t ready for, but now the film has grown in popularity. While many recognized the voices of Emma Thompson and David Hyde Pierce, a young Gordon-Levitt may have gotten lost in the mix, but did an incredible job voicing for a recluse teenager that was the polar opposite of the teens he played on screen.
