THE BAKER AND THE BEAUTY – “Pilot” –  (ABC/Eliza Morse) /

ABC debuted its heartwarming new series, The Baker and the Beauty this week. We’re ranking the top five moments from the premiere episode.

The Baker and the Beauty is ABC‘s new romantic-comedy series starring Nathalie Kelley and Victor Rasuk. It is based on the Israeli rom-com of the same name. Rasuk plays Daniel Garcia, an ordinary guy who works at his family’s bakery. After rejecting his girlfriend’s public marriage proposal, Daniel winds up swept off his feet by gorgeous supermodel, Noa Hamilton (Kelley).

The Baker and the Beauty hits that sweet spot between being overly cheesy and predictable and instead becomes an utterly charming comedy. It helps that the entire Garcia family is well-cast, making the family scenes delightful to watch. With so many great scenes in the first episode to choose from, it was hard to narrow it down to our top five, but we managed!

5. Vanessa’s proposal blowout.

Daniel and Vanessa go out to eat at a fine dining establishment that probably sports a few Michelin stars. It is there he first encounters Noa after she hears him giving himself a pep talk in the bathroom.

Afterward, he returns to his meal with Vanessa and is horrified to discover she wants to propose to him. Daniel’s family warned him that she might expect a grand gesture at a restaurant like that. Still, he didn’t take them seriously until Vanessa starts croaking “Love Story” by Taylor Swift in the middle of the restaurant for everyone to see — and record.

Unfortunately for her, Daniel rejects her proposal, and she pays him back by dumping soup down his shirt and storming out. I do feel sorry for Vanessa, although I think public proposals are horrible, nightmarish things, it must have been humiliating for her. That said, she and Daniel were clearly not on the same page regarding their future together.
