Hope for When Calls the Heart fans fearing the loss of Leland Coulter
Several main characters are gone from the beloved drama, When Calls the Heart, and now, fans have another reason to be concerned.
Caution: This post contains spoilers for the Sunday, April 12 episode of When Calls the Heart.
In 2018, Constable Jack Thornton was killed off-screen as the actor who portrayed him, Daniel Lissing, had decided to leave the show. That was a devastating blow for fans. The following year, the show lost Lori Loughlin, who was Abigail Stanton, and Carter Ryan Evancic, who was Abigail’s son, Cody. And before any of this began, Pastor Frank, played by Mark Humphrey, was removed from the cast. So, all in all, there has been quite a bit of loss in the seven seasons of this show, especially since additional supporting characters from season 1 were also phased out.
Sunday night gave the fans another reason to worry as Kavan Smith’s character, Leland Coulter, was in an accident that left him with a severe head injury. Rumors began flying immediately after the end of the episode, and many fans have declared their intention to desert the show if Lee is, indeed, killed.

Kavan Smith’s character, who has been with When Calls the Heart since Season 2, is popular and one-half of an equally popular married couple—Rosemary and Lee. Kavan himself has been with the Hallmark Channel for at least six years if not more, appearing in several Christmas movies for the famous Countdown to Christmas. With such a solid footing at Hallmark, there seems to be no indication he is moving on nor has his character spent any time away from the town.
When Daniel Lissing made the decision to leave, fans were given the chance to get used to his character being away as Jack left for several episodes to go fight in the Northern Territories. Many fans have now come to realize that When Calls the Heart writers were trying to make the inevitable ending hurt a bit less.
But Kavan may have already given fans the answer they need. In a February video interview with Home and Family, he said that his character has an accident later on in the season, and it gets him and Rosemary to thinking that they are not immortal. In fact, Kavan called it a “brush.” That alone should be enough to allay any fears.
Three episodes remain before the Season 7 finale. Hopefully, fans will have the answer they want long before then.
Did Kavan’s interview with Home and Family give you hope? Would you continue to watch the series without him? Share your thoughts in the comments.
