Amy and Jonah make a game-changing decision in the incomplete two-part Superstore season finale. Is California in their future?

Will they stay, or will they go? That’s the major question leading out of the first part of the incomplete two-part season finale of Superstore. In the previous episode, Amy received an opportunity to apply for a job at Zephra corporate in California, leading Amy to keep her potential new position from Jonah in the season finale. While Mateo helps Cheyenne plan her birthday party and Glenn pushes Sandra into an adoption, Amy and Jonah finally approach a discussion about their future.

Let’s recap the season finale of Superstore with the five best jokes from “California Part One.”

1. “The truth: You’re smart, hardworking, and a lot of fun to be around in medium quantities.”

More from NBC

Amy’s secret phone call with Zephra corporate about the job opportunity in California doesn’t stay secret for long. Corporate calls Dina for a reference, and of course, she’s honest as she can be about Amy. But since Amy hasn’t told Jonah about the job interview, since it’s only a regional interview, she asks Dina to keep the secret close to the vest.

Who else would take such a mission as seriously as Dina? Operation: Amy’s at the eye doctor immediately gets underway.

2. “I was begging to do it, but corporate said that anyone who asked more than three times can’t ’cause of pedophile reasons.”

Although Superstore doesn’t expressly state so, it’s Easter at Cloud 9, and the job position of the store’s Easter Bunny was apparently a coveted one (specifically by Glenn). Jonah offhandedly mentions to Dina about asking Amy a question about a store concern, sending Dina into her duty to deflect, deflect, deflect.

Obviously, Dina lays on the eye doctor details a little too thick, stoking Jonah’s suspicion. In order to avoid him, Dina says she’ll be taking over the role of the Easter Bunny, leading Jonah to falsely behead the bunny thinking it’d be Dina. She’s a good liar.

3. “She could be Greek.”

Amy arrives for her interview and catches a glimpse at her competition, who are all Latinas. The other candidates for the position comment on Zephra’s apparent unofficial requirement for the job and how they should lean into their culture to land the position, but Amy gives Zephra the benefit of the doubt. After all, she’s nervous. But when she sees another Latina leave the interview, Amy realizes her competition might be right.

She begins the interview by seemingly giving them what they want, but levels with them. If she’s getting the job, she wants it to be based on her experience and qualifications. She doesn’t want to be a diversity hire.

4. “We could have, like, a bunch of lizards there, but, like, you could get them high and see what they do.”

Mateo gets the ball rolling on Cheyenne’s 21st birthday celebration early, toasting her with a bottle of champagne and ideas for her upcoming party. While Cheyenne’s tastes are clearly a little more weird and wild, Mateo pitches something more closely resembling a chic dinner party that the police won’t be breaking up.

Facing Mateo’s party pressures, Cheyenne calls on the help of Beau, who presents “Cheyfest,” an extravaganza promising lavish accommodations they could never fulfill for 500 guests. Fyre Fest, anyone? Looks like Cheyenne should have listened to Mateo.

5. “Who wants to go to California anyway? It’s just, like, pretentious Florida.”

Jonah doesn’t believe Amy has a “dead spot,” and he definitely doesn’t believe that she’s taking saxophone lessons. It doesn’t take long for Jonah to find out the truth when Amy returns from her interview. Thankfully, there’s no huge fight about the lie, because Amy insists that she won’t get the position.

They do argue over Amy’s interest accepting the position when she gets the call that she actually got the job, resulting in a tense and awkward exchange (but not more awkward than Glenn pushing Sandra to adopt a 17-year-old named Tony). Dina helps Jonah see the light, and he tells Amy he’ll move with her to California. Will it happen? That’s to be continued…
