Thor in a psychological action movie? It’s just what the doctor ordered during quarantine. Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction is now streaming on Netflix.

With traffic, crowded malls and full parking lots being almost a foreign concept after over a month of quarantine, an action movie starring the “strongest Avenger” on a gritty rescue mission in the chaotic city of Dhaka, Bangladesh is a breadth of fresh air during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction is now streaming on Netflix, and we will definitely be watching.

In the film, directed by Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, Hemsworth plays a mercenary named Tyler Rake who is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of the biggest crime lord in India from the biggest drug lord in Bangladesh. While Hemsworth’s character succeeds in finding the boy, Ovi (Rudhraksh Jaiswal), and takes him into custody, the mission goes sideways as Dhaka begins to fall into chaos and the city goes into lockdown.

While Rake is told by his employers that the mission is no longer able to be completed, and is instructed to either kill the boy or leave him in the streets to fend for himself, Rake takes the path of most resistance and promises to get Ovi to safety.

In addition to being directed by the Avenger films’ infamous stunt expert, Extraction is also produced by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame. But Netflix’s Extraction has more going for it than just a solid backbone of filmmakers well versed in quality action and explosion scenes.

One of the most intriguing features in this action film is the intense emotional and mental strain the creators are aiming to have on viewers. In the film, Hemsworth’s character has lost his son and, by an intense turn of events, becomes a parental protector figure to Ovi, who started out as a means to money at the beginning of Rake’s mission.

The colorful and densely populated streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh almost seems like a different world now in our days of at-home work lives and going hours without seeing a single car drive by in our local neighborhoods. So, the fact that the psychological side of this film still is what stands out above the rest really speaks volumes to Hargrave’s mission to bring streamers an engaging action movie that’s highly emotionally based.

“Those were our favorite movies growing up,” said Joe Russo in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “Those ’70s action thrillers that were phenomenal character studies masquerading as action movies. It’s really a meditation on bravery.”
