Fox has long been the home for some of the biggest adult animated TV shows. With a push for more in the future, could Fox be the new juggernaut in animation?

Animated TV shows are the cornerstone of the television world. Whether you love or hate them, you can’t deny their impact. When thinking of ground-breaking shows, some point to the likes of The Flinstones, Tom & Jerry and Scooby-Doo. All of those shows are aimed at kids but 60 years later, the tables have turned. There are still a lot of animated shows aimed towards kids but the market has shifted.

The rise in adult animated shows has been exponential, to say the least. No conversation about adult animated shows would be complete without Fox. That’s not to say other shows aimed towards adults didn’t exist. They did but nothing could compare to the immenseness Fox brought to the table. Of course, we’re talking about The Simpsons. Since its premiere in 1989, the Simpson family quickly became the face of adult animation and they haven’t looked back since.

In bringing up The Simpsons, we have to talk about Family Guy, its raunchier counterpart. Both are still airing and putting up pretty solid ratings despite both airings for over 15 years. In addition, Fox also aired both American Dad and The Cleveland Show. Both were eventually canceled until the void was filled by Bob’s Burgers. Since then, it seemed like the trifecta was complete until Fox needed to fill the gap in their schedule.

More from FOX

In 2019, they aired the first season of Bless The Harts and in February 2020, they added Duncanville to the line-up. Both series are focused on families and the shenanigans that can happen in their respective families.

They share the same familial relatability like Bob’s Burgers but without the raunchy humor of the other shows. With both of them renewed for a second season, things look to be on the right track for Fox but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

As if those five shows didn’t make them a juggernaut, Fox is adding more to the line-up. The one set to premiere first is The Great North. Fox described it as, “…the Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as a single dad does his best to keep his weird bunch of kids close, especially as the artistic dreams of his only daughter lead her away from the family fishing boat and into the glamorous world of the local mall.” It was created by the Molyneux sisters, famous for their work on Bob’s Burgers.

The second upcoming series is Housebroken which is “an irreverent comedy that explores human dysfunction and neurosis through a group of neighborhood animals who live in the suburbs.” It sounds like it’s going to be an interesting show to add to the line-up. With all of the animated shows Fox is adding, they’re going to have a full schedule and hopefully, lots of eyes on their new projects.

Looking at Fox’s current and upcoming schedule, it’s no surprise that they’ll become an animated TV show juggernaut. Even though their shows all have the same sitcom vibe, each is different. Additionally, Fox always has good luck when it comes to putting animated shows in their Sunday night lineup. While it’s unclear how they’ll juggle all of them on one night, they’ll have some tricks up their sleeve.

Considering how much Fox has changed the animation landscape, it doesn’t surprise me that they’re producing more. Somehow, they almost always knock it out of the park when it comes to adult animated series. If anything, it could bring an entirely new market to their channel and possibly result in them changing their branding a bit. Some might even consider Fox an animated TV juggernaut but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

By this time next year, Fox could have seven animated shows for adults airing. Even if they don’t, they’re on pace to become an animation juggernaut. With everything going on right now, the market for adult animated shows could steer in their favor. Either way, Fox has and continues to be one of the biggest animated TV shows giants in Hollywood.
