6. The Rules of Attraction

Original Release Date: October 11, 2002

Box Office: The movie did okay at the box office, earning $11.8 million on a $4 million budget.

Critical Acclaim: The Rules of Attraction earned mixed reviews from critics but ultimately earning a cult following over the years despite not being beloved by film critics.

About the Role: In this film, Biel played a promiscuous college student named Lara Holleran, who was also the roommate of Lauren Hynde, one of the movie’s main characters.

Simply the Best: The Rules of Attraction is based on the popular Brett Easton Ellis book of the same name. It follows multiple students from Camden College across different narratives that slowly weave together during a crazy party.

The movie is controversial and somewhat thought-provoking, featuring many characters engaging in self-destructive habits.

While Lara is not the main character, Biel is fun to watch in this role as a carefree college student who unabashedly loves sex. It also stars Ian Somerhalder in one of his early film roles and James van der Beek. For those who are fans of Ellis, the movie is considered one of the best film adaptations of his novels and the author has said it closely captures the spirit of the book.
