Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 has had such a fun mess of musical numbers and love triangle drama that sometimes it’s easy to forget where the real emotional center of the show is. Zoey’s gift has given her the ability to help many people with their struggles, but she’s completely powerless when it comes to her father’s illness.
That brings us to “Zoey’s Extraordinary Mother.” Just like in the rest of the season, the episode title tells viewers which character gets Zoey’s help. This time, however, Zoey can’t even begin to think about doing it all on her own.

Zoey has no idea how to handle her own love life, so how could she possibly understand what her mom is facing? Sure, she’s about to lose her father, but that’s a different relationship dynamic. Everyone’s grief is different, and it’s especially difficult to put yourself in someone else’s shoes when you’ve never had what they stand to lose.
How do you help someone who’s about to lose the love of her life when you’re not even on good terms with the guy who might just be the love of your life? Enter the legendary Bernadette Peters, who guest stars in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1, Episode 11.
Without giving away too much about Peters’ role, let’s just say her appearance has a huge impact. Broadway World probably teased it best:
"Peters plays Deb, a rather bold and fearless widow with a new lease on life who comes into the Clarke family’s orbit at just the right time."
Bernadette Peters isn’t the only guest star boasted by the penultimate episode of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1, though. Series star Jane Levy teased a second guest earlier in the week.
If all that talk about guest stars and grief has you worried there won’t be any movement on any other major stories, though, don’t be afraid. There are a couple of hints at what else we might expect in the episode summary from NBC MediaVillage.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Mother” promises some quality time for Zoey and Joan. There’s also plenty of stress for any viewers still on Team Max. “Bye, Bye, Bye” isn’t exactly a song you sing to someone you’re still actively pursuing, after all…or is it?
