It was not an easy choice for Martina McBride during Songland Season 2, Episode 4. The four songs were excellent, but here’s a look at the one that she picked in the end.
Some weeks, you can just tell who is going to be the No. 1 choice. That was the case during Luis Fonsi’s episode. However, there are weeks where it’s hard to make a choice. The songs transform so well that you just can’t tell which way a recording artist is going to go. That was the case this week.

Martina McBride was the one to choose a song. Even those who don’t know country music will know McBride’s songs. As described in the episode, she is Country Royalty. For McBride, it was always going to be about the lyrics.
The songwriting hopefuls were: Ckay with “Heroes,” Halie with “Girls Like Me,” the duo Wolves with “Miracle,” and Jeffrey James with “We Can Be (Heroes).”
The one who immediately had a step up from the rest was Jeffrey James, who shared that he makes a living writing songs for other artists and himself in Nashville, TN. However, that didn’t mean he would be the top pick. There were some excellent choices with some excellent lyrics to tell a story.
One of the great things about Songland is seeing the initial songs transform. Throughout this episode, lyrics were rewritten and melodies were switched around a little.
In the end, there was one song that spoke more than others. With the lyrical changes to become more of a love letter from mother to daughter, Halie Wooldridge’s “Girls Like Me” became the winning song.
