Batwoman was renewed for season 2, but it will be moving forward without its current series star.

Ruby Rose, who took on the iconic role of Batwoman for the first season of the series, has made the decision to exit the series ahead of season 2.

Rose had been showrunner Caroline Dries first choice to head the tv series, but thought Rose was too big of a name to accept the role, which involved a move for the actress from Los Angeles to Vancouver where the CW films its series.

The commitment also limited the actress’ ability to make movies, but Rose said she was excited to take on the role. She wanted the show to help people who felt alone and knew it was an important role to play.

Thanking Rose for her contributions to the first season, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television promised they would cast another LGBTQ actress to take up the mantle and looked forward to introducing the new Kate Kane in the coming months.

Finding someone who can take over as a lead character won’t be the easiest task, though, as Dries went through “tons” of auditions looking for someone just like Rose before the actress accepted the role.

It was David Rappaport, the CW’s casting director, who encouraged Dries to offer the part to Ruby Rose, instead of continuing the search for her alternate who seemingly didn’t exist. But the executive producers have indicated they are committed to the show’s second season as well as its future seasons.
