Based on the novels by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher and Season 1 is now available to stream on Netflix.

If you’ve finished binge-watching Never Have I Ever, Hollywood, Dead to Me and all of Netflix‘s best recent new releases, you’re definitely looking for the next good guilty pleasure to dig your heels into. Once you’ve also finished choosing your own adventure with Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend (a hilarious must!), fans of feel-good, comforting shows will want to add the first season of the new romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias to their watch lists.

Based on the series of bestselling novels by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias centers on three lifelong best friends as they navigate the treacherous waters of embarking on the next phase of their lives in small town South Carolina.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher stars as Maddie Townsend, a stay-at-home single mother of three children, who decides to go into business with her best friends, Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott) and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley).

Together, the three women will dodge life’s curveballs regarding love, family, and career. For starters, Maddie also struggles with her ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein) expecting a baby with his younger girlfriend, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears). But Maddie might find the serenity she’s looking for, ironically in a town called Serenity, thanks to a new romance with Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening).

The first season of Sweet Magnolias derives its inspiration from Stealing Home, the first novel in the extensive book series first published in 2007, with the most recent eleventh book published in 2014. It’s an essential watch for fans of the books who have been devoted to the quintessential beach-read series over the years. There’s no doubt the Netflix adaptation does it justice.

Of course, this isn’t Netflix’s first foray into developing a popular series of romantic drama novels into a hit show. Last year, the streaming service launched Virgin River, starring This Is Us and The Walking Dead standout Alexandra Breckinridge. The series, which was renewed for a second season, is based on the popular book series by Robyn Carr. Clearly, if you watch one feel-good “rom-dram,” you’ll without a doubt want to watch the other.
