Boyz II Men picked the song on Songland Season 2, Episode 7

Everyone has heard of Boyz II Men. In fact, you’ve likely listened to one of the smooth ballads of the past. Which song did the group pick on Songland Season 2, Episode 7?

Like every group or artist, Boyz II Men had an original idea for the type of song they were looking for. While they wanted something with a beautiful chord structure and harmonies, they also wanted something contemporary. The idea is to bring their sound to a new generation.

More from NBC

As usual, four upcoming songwriters had the chance to share their songs. Zak Waters from LA was the first to take to the stage with the song “Bad Things.” The song is full of harmonies and does have a sound of Boyz II Men from back in the day, but would it be too much like the old sound?

Next up was duo Juan and Lisa Winans from Washington D.C. with the song “Maybe.” The husband and wife team certainly brought a song that would work at a pop ballad. Would it be enough?

The third songwriter on the stage was Charles Infamous from Lancaster, PA with “Jukebox.” The song was all about nostalgia and understanding the classic music that brought sounds to today, but does also touch on modern themes.

Finally, it was Chrislee from Essex Fells, NJ with “Love Struck.” The song is about the challenges and passion that comes with relationships and is about his current girlfriend.

Only three songs would make it to the studios. Charles was the one sent home. While Boyz II Men loved the song, they didn’t think they had the time to develop the song to get it to where it would need to be.

It’s always interesting seeing how the songs develop from the original composition. Zak’s song certainly developed more of a modern R&B sound that would suit Boyz II Men today rather than a song of the past. The Winans developed some beautiful harmonies that would make you think of Boyz II Men of the past but kept a contemporary sound. Would they win?

Sadly, they wouldn’t. It would be Chrislee’s “Love Struck” that would become the song for Boyz II Men. Check out the track below:
