3 – Why you should watch Ripper Street

Ripper Street is a British TV drama series set in London just a few months after the infamous Jack the Ripper’s final murder. The community has been on high alert for some time but has finally started to let their guard down when the show begins.

As new murders present themselves however, the locals are convinced the new cases mean the return of the Ripper, but Detective Reid makes it his priority to solve case mysteries and hunt down the real killers. And as the story progresses, Reid finds himself more and more involved in the “criminal underworld” of East London, working nonstop with his team to investigate and prevent more violence.

Ripper Street‘s format and tone set it apart from Peaky Blinders, but it’s the world this British period drama has created that may be most appealing for fans. The city streets and landscape of the sets act as their own character. The people may be part of a much larger city, but there’s a smaller community feeling in the district where the series takes place, much like Small Heath.

The storylines in Ripper Street are more episodic than serialized, though the way each story is shaped brings the audience on the creative and strategic investigation of an enemy. The drama is mixed with action, violence, fast-paced sleuthing and ensemble crime fighting—lots of ingredients Peaky fans love.

All five seasons of Ripper Street are currently available to stream on Netflix. It’s not likely that a sixth season will ever be produced, but there are plenty of episodes to dive into as part of the finished series to keep you entertained and solving mysteries.
