The first season was certainly one of the most talked-about shows of last year. Boosted by a podcast, it told the story of a Southern Californian woman who was conned into a dangerous marriage. The second season tells a different tale, setting up an anthology series that we’ve come to know and love through the likes of American Horror Story and Into the Dark.
Broderick’s story is one of heartbreak. Based on Bella Stumbo’s novel “Until the Twelfth of Never,” the series looks at Betty and her marriage to (and divorce from) malpractice attorney Dan. Dan gaslighted his wife to pretend that he wasn’t having an affair. Of course, he was, and Betty soon found herself without a husband or her children.
Dirty John looks at divorce
The season will focus on the divorce of the couple, and what it did to Betty Broderick. She came apart at the seams, pushing away friends and family with her anger and outbursts.
This story is about no-fault divorces and how they were supposed to equalize everything in the courtroom. Instead, they’ve led to more war within marriages. Creator Alexandra Cunningham told Entertainment Weekly she’s never seen the no-fault divorces actually lead to a 50-50 split of property.
It’s a season to check out if you loved the first. The first two episodes air tonight.
