SYFY WIRE’s The Great Debate dives into fan-favorite geek culture topics

Inspired by SYFY’s live panels at fan-favorite conventions like San Diego Comic-Con, New York Comic Con, and South by Southwest, The Great Debate has been reimagined as a series with a rotating cast of celebrity panelists, and it’s a truly nostalgic celebration of nerd culture. Hosted by Baron Vaughn (who also hosted the NYCC and SXSW panels in 2019) is joined by his witty Droid sidekick, DB-8 (get it?), who helps Vaughn fact-check answers and award points to each of the debaters.

This comedy game show reminded us of a blend between an opinionated talk show and a show-and-tell challenge with a large splash of Whose Line is it Anyway thrown into the mix (though yes, the points do matter… kind of). In each episode, the four celebrity contestants compete in a series of different style rounds, earning points along the way.

From persuasive arguments with wild card answers of their choice, to classic debate-style questions, to playing popular party games with a SYFY WIRE twist, to role-playing characters within their favorite geek universes, the debaters must defend their answers with a combination of knowledge and humor in each round.

And no, you don’t need to be an expert on all of the topics debated in the show to be entertained by The Great Debate; there is definitely something for everyone. Topics range from debates on arcade games, to retro technology, to favorite characters, to iconic storylines and more—and the questions address a mix of titles from science fiction, fantasy, horror, comics and “general geekdom.” Nothing is off the table.

Though San Diego Comic-Con will not take place this year, Comic-Con International will launch a way for fans to celebrate their favorite fandoms from home, and adding The Great Debate series to your schedule is another way to channel some of that SDCC energy this summer!
