When A Discovery of Witches returns, will its viewership be affected?

A Discovery of Witches, the popular series based on books by Deborah Harkness, returns later this year. But will its viewership be affected after so long?

A Discovery of Witches, a supernatural drama with romance, mystery, and action, debuted in September 2018 on Sky One, it was an immediate hit. The popularity of the series resulted in a two-year renewal before the first season had concluded. The drama finally became available to American viewers in early 2019 via streaming on Sundance Now.

Filming for season 2 of the series concluded in January 2020, but an official release date has not been provided. Series star Teresa Palmer did take to social media to confirm that it would be returning in November or December of this year.

However, that will, most likely, only be for UK viewers. It might be several months after that before American viewers will see the continuing story of Dr. Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont.

Viewers have been stuck at home for the past few months due to the pandemic and have gotten into the habit of bingeing a lot of television via streaming services.

Tuning in to see a show once a week has become a thing of the past as of late which could have an impact on A Discovery of Witches. In addition, the release is coming close to the holiday season. After a long quarantine, many viewers might be more eager to shop than to watch.

Will viewers tune in weekly to watch A Discovery of Witches?

Episodic television relies on viewers to tune in when the show airs, or at least shortly thereafter via DVR. The number of viewers and the demographics play a large role in the renewal of a series.

The first season of A Discovery of Witches didn’t begin streaming until January 2019, four months after its premiere on Sky One. Frustrated viewers have already expressed impatience over the long wait and, having waited this long, may choose to wait a few more months to binge all ten episodes at once.

While this would certainly be good for streaming numbers, it could have an affect on future seasons of A Discovery of Witches. There’s no way to tell until the series returns later this year. There’s no doubt fans are still interested, but the question is: will a week-to-week episode frustrate them even more? And, if so, will lower viewership numbers mean no season 4?
