The Karate Kid trilogy is now available to stream on Netflix
When’s the last time you practiced waxing on and waxing off? What about painting the fence or sanding the floor? Thankfully, we’ll leave these tasks to Daniel LaRusso and watch him learn the ins and outs of martial arts from Mr. Miyagi as The Karate Kid trilogy is now streaming on Netflix.
The Karate Kid stars Ralph Macchio as LaRusso, a Newark teenager who moves to Reseda with his mother. As the new kid in school, LaRusso runs into trouble with the local bad boy, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), after LaRusso befriends his ex-girlfriend, Ali Mills (Elizabeth Shue). After Lawrence and his friends physically attack LaRusso, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) defends LaRusso, and eventually trains him in martial arts.

Through unorthodox methods such as waxing the car and painting the fence, Mr. Miyagi successfully trains Daniel-san to be a gifted fighter. The first film culminates with the All Valley Tournament as LaRusso takes on Lawrence of Cobra Kai, led by their ruthless leader, John Kreese (Martin Kove).
The Karate Kid became an instant success
The Karate Kid was a huge hit both commercially and critically. The film grossed over $90 million in 1984 and became one of the five highest-grossing films of that year. For his role as Mr. Miyagi, Morita received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
The film spawned two sequels with the team of Macchio and Morita: The Karate Kid Part II in 1986, and The Karate Kid Part III in 1989. In Part II, Daniel-san and Mr. Miyagi visit Okinawa in order to care for Miyagi’s sick father. In Part III, Kreese teams up with Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) to exact their revenge on LaRusso and Miyagi for their victory at the tournament from the first film.
The first three films heading to Netflix is only the first step in for the streaming service’s “Karate Kid takeover.” Netflix recently purchased the rights to Cobra Kai, the television series that serves as the sequel to the franchise. The first two seasons of Cobra Kai will arrive on the service sometime towards the end of the year and Season 3 will premiere sometime after that.
