Here’s what we know so far about His Dark Materials Season 2

Recently the cast and crew of HBO‘s His Dark Materials came together for a Comic-Con@Home panel. There we not only learned some behind the scenes information but we were also teased with information about Season 2.

The show is based on the books by Philip Pullman consisting of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Each season of the show will likely cover one of the books.

The show has already been renewed for Season 2 and we’ve got a sneak peek. Here’s what we know so far.

His Dark Materials Season 2 release date

The show has thankfully been renewed already and will air on HBO. With some luck, Season 2 had mostly finished filming just before they had to shut down due to the pandemic so it won’t be much longer until we get to see it.

Unfortunately, it is too soon for an official release date and none has been announced yet. But we do know it won’t be long until we know the date because the show is confirmed to return this fall on HBO.

His Dark Materials Season 2 cast

Most of the original cast members are expected to return for Season 2 and reprise their characters. This includes:

  • Dafne Keen
  • Amir Wilson
  • Ruth Wilson
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda

More from HBO

Andrew Scott is also joining the show as Will Parry’s father John Parry. It was revealed at the panel that his daemon will be played by none other than his Fleabag costar Phoebe Waller-Bridge. As reported by Deadline Terence Stamp, Jade Anouka, and Simone Kirby will also be joining the cast in Season 2. Terence Stamp will be playing Giacomo Paradisi, Jade Anouka will be playing Ruta Skadi, and Simone Kirby will be playing Dr. Mary Malone.

Whether James McAvoy will have a large part in Season 2 remains to be seen. His character Lord Asriel does not prominently feature in the book this season will be based on. It was revealed at Comic-Con@Home that they had been planning a standalone episode that would be centered on Lord Asriel, but sadly they were unable to complete it due to the pandemic. So that episode has been set aside for the time being and is not expected to be released alongside the rest of Season 2.

His Dark Materials Season 2 synopsis

There does not seem to be an official synopsis released yet for Season 2 of the drama. However, we do know that it is expected to follow the second book in the series, The Subtle Knife. That gives us a pretty big clue as to what the season will be about.

Season 2 will find our main characters Lyra and Will finally meeting and joining together. They will come together to discover new worlds and learn more about the mysterious Dust. We will also find out more about Lyra’s alethiometer and the subtle knife which the book title refers to.
