Courteney Cox is back as Gale Weathers in Scream 5 and we’ve got questions

Scream 5 is happening whether we like it or not; and with the potential to mess up a beloved series of movies with a reboot, the “not” is more out of fear than anything else. Now, at least one more original cast member is coming back to sweeten up the deal.

Deadline recently reported that Courteney Cox will be returning as everyone’s favorite love-to-hate-her journalist, Gale Weathers. Between this news and the report from earlier this year that franchise lovers would get to see David Arquette as Deputy Dewey again, that opens up a whole new level of excitement and tons of questions.

Dewey and Gale have been a package deal ever since their mutual flirtation in the first film in the Scream franchise. Weirdly, the on-screen couple’s relationship has even managed to have somewhat of a parallel to Cox and Arquette’s real-life one.

We need to know what’s next for Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers in Scream 5

That brings us to Scream 5 and the ton of questions we have about what’s next for Gale. First off, since Gale and Dewey’s relationship hit a rough patch in the previous film, are they going to be broken up in the reboot?

It would certainly continue the pattern of mirroring the actors’ relationship, but we really hope it doesn’t happen that way. Solving that last series of murders had to bring the couple closer together again…right?

Which brings us to our next point: Assuming Neve Campbell will be back—which she had better be—what is Sidney and Gale’s relationship going to be? The Sidney/Gale dynamic started out with clear enmity, and that punch after Gale’s “I’ll send you a copy” line in the first Scream was about as iconic as it gets. But then, over time and enough survived serial murders, the franchise’s two most important ladies became friends…ish. If this is a true reboot, will Sidney and Gale’s friendship go back to the good ol’ days of snark and punches?

What will Gale’s career look like in Scream 5? Gale Weathers was pretty popular back in the day; but in Scream 4, “struggling” is a polite way to put the status of her journalism career, such as it was. Here’s hoping she’s in a much better, much more successful, place in the reboot. That kind of ties back in with the marriage to Dewey, too, since part of the reason Gale was having so much trouble was the boredom of having moved back to Woosboro for love. But as we all know, Woodsboro never stays boring for long…

Will Gale Weathers continue her tradition of being just nosy enough to find out who the killer is in Scream 5, or will she maybe even be the killer? Scream may have given us the rules of horror movies and then smashed them all to smithereens, but one rule for the series itself has always been pretty obvious. You don’t have the final showdown with the killers without Gale snooping around and winding up just seconds away from the killer’s knife, only to join Sidney Prescott and Deputy Dewey in emerging victorious.

One way the new film could shake things up would be to make Gale the actual killer—possibly even in an attempt to stage some murders to revive her career—but honestly? That old saying about how if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? Let’s go with that. Here’s hoping Gale is involved but not to blame.

Then, there’s the obvious: Will Gale Weathers survive Scream 5? For the record, the only way this movie is going to be watchable is if the answer is not just “yes” but “yes, and she’s awesome when she does it.”

This franchise doesn’t work without Gale, Dewey, and Sidney. Period.
