Who is that girl I see? Thanks to Disney+, it’s about to be Mulan. In the flesh, no less. Pretty soon, fans will finally get to watch the classic tale like we’ve never watched it before. And it goes without saying, the world cannot wait to see the animated icon in live-action.
So, let’s get down to business. Here’s what we know so far about the live-action adaptation.
Mulan release date
The upcoming movie is a Disney+ exclusive available for streaming on September 4.
Mulan synopsis
Directed by Niki Caro, the film tells a similar to the story we all know so well, but with some respectable twists. It’s been reported that the film notably deviates from the iconic 1998 Disney movie plot, but people say it’s for the better. In other words, many say it stands alone in its goodness.
As the story still goes, the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man in every household is required to serve in the Imperial Army, with no exceptions. As luck would have it, Hua Mulan is the eldest daughter of an honored and ailing warrior.
When the time comes for someone from her family to go, Mulan decides to take the place of her father, masquerading as a man. In constant fear of being exposed, she embarks on a harrowing, transformative, and deeply personal journey (not to mention, one heck of a come-up), becoming a respected warrior in her own right byway of inner-strength, perseverance, and passing as just one of the boys for as long as possible.
And in most ways, she does it better than the men!
Mulan cast
Liu Yifei stars as Mulan. Along with the main actress, Jet Li portrays The Emperor, with Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, and Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan, among others. Tzi Mua, Yozon Li, Rosalind Chao, and Ron Yuan will also be getting in on all the live-action.
