The last we saw of our favorite Devil he was leaving back to Hell to be its guardian and stop demons from coming to Earth to take his nephew. Of course, right before he left, Chloe had tearfully confessed her feelings for him, so our Deckerstar hearts were in pain to see them separated.
How that Deckerstar problem made them stronger
The beginning of Season 5 found Lucifer still being the warden of Hell and Chloe teaming up with Maze and doing her best to forget her broken heart. It doesn’t take too long though before Lucifer finds his way back to sunny Los Angeles and reunites with Chloe.
Given the trailer that was released, we figured Lucifer’s brother Michael would be Chloe and Lucifer’s biggest problem, and he was a big problem to be sure. But Michael’s appearance in the trailer overshadowed the other big Deckerstar problem. That Chloe was a gift from God specifically for Lucifer and she didn’t even know about it.
Lucifer had time to grapple with that realization in previous seasons and come to terms with it, finally accepting that what he and Chloe had was real. This season Chloe found out the truth and it was her turn to take some space to come to terms with the idea that she was a gift from God for the Devil.
It was harder for Chloe to deal with the truth than it was for Lucifer, understandably so considering she’s only human and isn’t used to dealing with celestial issues. Plus, while Lucifer had to deal with feeling manipulated by receiving a gift Chloe had to deal with being a gift.
This problem was going to have to be confronted if Chloe and Lucifer were ever going to have a real chance of being together, and that’s what Season 5A did. After Amenadiel meets a group of nuns who become almost immediately entranced by him he comes to a surprising realization about the way his powers and Lucifer’s powers work.
The nuns became entranced by Amenadiel because they saw their love for God reflected through him. Similarly, people are drawn to Lucifer because they see their own desires reflected through him. The reason Chloe is Lucifer’s perfect match and a gift for him is because she’s immune to his mojo. That means she is the only one who can see and love Lucifer for who he truly is.
This was the cleanest way the writers could have handled an issue that could have been potentially problematic. Having a woman be created as a gift for a man with no choice of her own is something that might not sit well with the audience. It doesn’t treat them like a person in their own right with their own worth.
Chloe was never just a love interest; she’s a detective, a mother, a friend, and she should be allowed to choose her own destiny. Having Chloe’s gift be that she’s immune to Lucifer’s mojo and therefore can see the real Lucifer both allows her to be his perfect partner and keep her agency. No matter how much we ship Deckerstar, it is just as important that Chloe be respected as an individual character and the writers found a way to do that.
This understanding of how Chloe is a gift for Lucifer means that Chloe still has a choice in what she does and her actions and feelings are her own, which is as it should be. Once Chloe comes to this realization it leads to some very sweet and steamy Deckerstar scenes—be still our shipper hearts! The chemistry between Tom Ellis and Lauren German is better than ever and it makes the five seasons of waiting totally worth it.
So with a clever interpretation of the way angelic powers work, Lucifer Season 5A was both able to give insight into Lucifer and Amenadiel and solve a problem that could have been very problematic for Deckerstar and leave them even stronger than before.
Season 5B is sure to throw more problems at Deckerstar, like that pesky little ‘I love you’ issue, but at least the issue of Chloe being a gift has now seemingly been put to rest and resolved.
