Grey’s Anatomy is setting its eyes on an early September filming start

There is no doubt this is not a usual year. We’re into September, and we have no idea when our favorite TV shows will return to broadcast networks. The good news is the end is in sight for some, with filming dates eyed for many, including Grey’s Anatomy.

Everything had to shut down in March. That was understandable, but eyes are on when it will be safe for filming to happen again. ABC films the majority of its shows in Los Angeles, which does cause some problems for filming. It is one of the hardest areas hit in the U.S.

Deadline shares some good news, though. Grey’s Anatomy is looking to start filming on Sept. 8. The first table read is set to happen on Sept. 3. Nobody has confirmed this outside of Deadline‘s sources as of yet.

These dates are not set in stone

It’s important to note that the dates are never set in stone. The pandemic could change the date, pushing it back.

More from ABC

Previously, Aug. 24 was a mentioned date for the medical drama to return to production. That didn’t happen. Already, things have been pushed back for the safety of all involved.

The benefit of Grey’s Anatomy is that the majority of the show is filmed in the studios. It’s all done on sets, which means it’s easier to manage the risk of the coronavirus spreading. Shows that film mostly on location are going to struggle the most.

What does this mean for Grey’s Anatomy Season 17’s premiere?

Of course, now you want to know when Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 could premiere. There isn’t an official date yet, but if filming starts early September, there’s a chance the show could premiere in 2020.

We’re probably looking at a November 2020 start date. When shows premiere in September, they return to filming in July. That gives them two months to get a few episodes finished before airing. It takes about eight to 10 days for many shows to film one episode, so two months realistically means only four episodes. The shows won’t want the networks to catch up to them too quickly.

ABC has already set a plan for September and October. It’s relying on many of its scripted dramas to be able to return starting toward the end of October. Comedies will likely return first as they take less time to film an episode, and we’ll probably see staggered starts depending on when shows are ready.

We’ll keep an eye on the release information for when we know something about Grey’s Anatomy Season 17.
