Disney certainly received some pushback when it came to Mulan. Those interested in the movie were not happy to hear that they would have to pay $30 on top of their Disney Plus subscription.

Of course, we knew the movie would eventually head to Disney Plus as part of the regular subscription. The question has always been how long we’d have to wait. It turns out we’re not going to be waiting too long.

According to Deadline, Mulan will be on Disney Plus in December 2020, three months after the release of the movie on Disney Plus Premier.

Premier access will be available until November

Those who do want to watch the movie right away will be able to purchase the live-action reboot as of Sept. 4. You’ll need a Disney Plus subscription and will then be able to purchase the movie for an extra $30.

Once you have it, you get to keep it for as long as you have your Disney Plus subscription. You’ll be able to rewatch it as much as you like. This works very differently to most movies that have been released on VOD to rent throughout the pandemic. The movie has been available for 48 hours once it’s started and then you have to rent it again. You won’t need to do that with this Disney movie.

The movie will only be available until Nov. 2 to purchase. Then there is a month break where only those who already got the movie will be able to watch it.

Mulan will be on Disney Plus in December

As of Dec. 4, the movie will be available for all Disney Plus subscribers. You won’t need to pay extra; just your usual subscription.

Now the question is whether you’re willing to wait three months. Those who would usually wait for a movie to come to DVD and Blu-ray or to streaming likely will without hassle. Those who were going to go see it in the theaters anyway? I reckon quite a few will purchase it right away.

Considering the cost of the movie and the lack of theaters open right now, this type of release does make sense financially for Disney. What does it mean for future releases, though?
