Will Dani’s HOH reign hurt her game on Big Brother All-Stars?

Head of Household remains the most coveted position of power in the Big Brother house, but it’s also one of the most dreaded. Naturally, whomever wins HOH must nominate two houseguests for eviction, as per the format of the game. But if there’s a twist or pivotal Power of Veto win, both of which happened during Dani’s HOH reign, up to four nominees could ride the block. This week, Dani could have named five nominees if things had truly gone south.

Of course, after Dani’s wall competition win (the same competition she won when she needed it most on Big Brother 13), she nominated David and Kevin for eviction. Once David used his disruptor power to remove himself from the block, Dani nominated Tyler. When Da’Vonne won the veto and chose to remove Kevin, Dani nominated Ian. By all accounts, Dani’s week as the Head of Household has been one of the messiest weeks in All-Stars due to things in and out of her control.

You might have your own personal feelings about Dani, but for the purposes of this discussion, we’re strictly talking gameplay. There’s two ways of looking at Dani’s HOH, and that’s through an optimistic lens and through a disastrous lens. Obviously, it’s clear to see how winning HOH got messy for Dani. As previously mentioned, she had to name four nominees, which is double the amount most HOHs this season have nominated. That’s double the enemies.

Have things gone wrong for Dani on Big Brother?

When Dani chose Tyler as the replacement nominee for David, many probably wondered what she was doing. She had just settled her issues with Tyler and made a deal not to go after each other moving forward, so why would she go back on her word and target him?

For starters, she probably wanted to throw the “other side” off the scent of The Committee. But deep down, the Dani from BB13 that got restless and turned on her alliance wants to cut to the chase.

Unfortunately for Dani, taking the chance to throw Tyler on the block so soon and backpedaling on her reasoning could prove to shoot herself in the foot when it comes to trust. In fact, her feet took a few more bullets when Da’Vonne used the Power of Veto to save Kevin, and Dani nominated Ian in his place. Since she backed down on cannibalizing The Committee, Ian and Enzo were her only re-nom options. She’s aligned with Enzo, so Ian has to endure a potential backdoor.

Dani anticipated that her HOH could have been messy with two secret powers lying in wait (she holds the third), but she couldn’t have anticipated that it could be this messy. From this point on, she’s on the radar of The Committee because she’s shown that she’s unafraid to take shots at her alliance. She’s put a sour taste in David and Kevin’s mouths by nominating them. And she’s in danger of losing trust and jury votes from her two eviction night nominees.

Sure, that all sounds very gloom and doom, but can she rebound from this? Optimistically, anything can happen in the Big Brother house. Dani’s history suggests she can maneuver around this with deflection, deals, and a few necessary comp wins.

In her defense, she’s the first HOH to take a real shot that’s unpredictable and outside of the majority alliance’s comfort zone. We have to at least give her some credit, right? Had anyone else from her alliance won HOH, a huge threat and a former winner more than likely wouldn’t have been the final nominees. Just saying.

If Dani can make it out of her HOH week without a giant target on her back from all four of her nominees and manage to stay off the block next week, it will have been a solid big-picture move on her part. The same can be said for Da’Vonne’s stellar win and use of the veto. Dani has the option of using her power to play HOH again, but even that poses some downsides.

No doubt about it, game-changing decisions were made, and how the week’s players in power navigate the impending impacts will determine the true all-stars.
