When is Euphoria coming back for season 2?
HBO’s Euphoria shocked the world when it debuted last summer, generating critical acclaim and a large fanbase for its honest take on drug abuse, high school life, and the pressures of being a teenager. The awesome cinematography and soundtrack also played a large part in its popularity.
Now that it’s been over a year since the first season concluded, you might be wondering what the fate of the series is. Will it be back for another season, and if so, when?
Here’s everything we know so far.
Will there be a season 2 of Euphoria?
Thankfully, there will definitely be a second season. As we previously reported, the HBO hit was renewed for season 2 pretty early on, with only four episodes under its belt when it officially got the green light to continue for a second installment.
While the renewal was early, it wasn’t entirely surprising. Deadline reported at the time that the pilot episode, which premiered on June 16, 2019, saw over 5.5 million viewers tuning in. With a star like Zendaya, along with Drake serving as an executive producer, there was a lot of hype going into the first episode.
Is Zendaya in season 2 of Euphoria?
Though the abstract ending to season 1 left fans with a lot of questions, including whether or not Zendaya’s character Rue lived or passed away, the Emmy nominee will be returning for season 2.
While speaking with InStyle for their September 2020 cover story, the actress dished:
"I do miss Rue. She’s like my little sister in a lot of ways. And going back to that character is a home base for me. There is a beautiful second season that has been written, but in order to do it the way we want to do it, we need to wait until it’s safer."
Euphoria season 2 release date
Clearly, the cast and the fans alike are so ready for another season. But unfortunately, as you probably guessed, safety concerns and precautions surrounding COVID-19 have put a hold on filming. Season 1 was filmed in California, which is still a hot spot for the virus. It hasn’t been confirmed if CA was the planned state to film season 2 or not, but a date for production to start has unfortunately not been set.
Zendaya did tease, however, a possible “bridge” episode that could come out before season 2 and serve as a connection for the two seasons. While a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month, the 24-year-old actress explained of the idea:
"An episode that we can do with a limited amount of people in a safer environment that can give people something, because we also miss Euphoria as the people who create it, too, and give everyone who loves the show a little something so we have something to live on until we are able to go into season 2."
We’ll take whatever we can get!
Though it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting Euphoria season 2 anytime soon, we’re thankful for Zendaya keeping us in the loop on what’s going on. Time to binge season 1 another time!
