1. Black Panther

Release date: Feb. 16, 2018

Box office earnings: There’s no doubt that the movie was a financial success. It made it’s $200m budget back over opening weekend and would go on to gross $700m in the United States. It would make $1.3b worldwide.

Critical acclaim: Do we need to say it? Black Panther was a critical success with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and Certified Fresh. Audiences are a little more reserved.

The movie itself would win three Oscars for music, costume, and production, and it was nominated for four others. Chadwick Boseman would be among the names listed in the Screen Actors Guild Awards when it won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

About the role: I’m not sure the role needs any introduction. Boseman plays T’Challa, the son of King T’Chaka of Wakanda. He’s also the heir and becomes king upon his father’s death. However, while he’s ready to serve the nation, he learns there are factions that challenge the throne and threaten Wakanda. As Black Panther, he must team up with CIA Agent Everett K. Ross to protect the country from war.

Why it’s a success: There is certainly the fact that this movie offered superheroes that Black boys and girls could look up to and aspire to be. Boseman did that as T’Challa, but we can’t forget Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Michael B. Jordan, and Sterling K. Brown stood out.

This movie also made sure Boseman became a household name. Some hadn’t heard of him, despite the amazing performances up to this point. This was the one that got the heavy promotion and was set in a Marvel world that got people tuning in.

The performance and movie wasn’t just about servicing diversity for one quick movie. It was about making it clear that this can’t be a one-off and that these characters need to be seen again.
