Lovecraft Country age rating: What is the HBO show rated?
Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country made its premiere on HBO in August. The series has been shocking viewers week by week with its twists and turns, not to mention creepy monsters and terrifying real-life racism.
The new show follows protagonist Atticus Freeman, an African American war veteran who comes home from Korea and begins to uncover alarming family secrets. After discovering that he’s a descendant of a powerful and rich white family who is heavily involved in witchcraft and the supernatural, things turn from strange to scary very quickly.
While there are some comedic moments and fun scenes, Lovecraft Country first and foremost is a horror show. We would certainly recommend it, but if you’re debating whether or not your kids can watch it, you’d be best to read further.
What is Lovecraft Country rated?
According to IMDb, the HBO series is rated TV-MA. By the traditional rating system, that would mean it’s not appropriate for people under 17 years old. Apart from frightening monsters and graphic violence, there’s also many instances of nudity and some profanity.
As per usual with HBO shows, Lovecraft does not hold back on showing anything, so we would not advise children to watch it.
What are the monsters in Lovecraft Country?
If you’re curious on what exact monsters are featured on the show, some of them come from H.P. Lovecraft’s stories, such as shoggoths. Other creatures include the dead coming back to life, ghosts, and the kumiho spirit, a nine-tailed fox from Korean lore, among others.
Overall, this is definitely a show your kids can skip, for a variety of reasons.
