Why Supergirl’s ending doesn’t have to mean the end of Supergirl

Supergirl will wrap after six seasons on The CW, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end

After one season on CBS and five on the CW network, Supergirl will come to a close at the end of season 6, which has yet to start.

While Melissa Benoist, who just had a baby boy with her husband, Chris Wood, will be hanging up her superhero cape on a regular basis, there is always room for superheroes on The CW, especially with the upcoming debut of Superman and Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch.

Tyler Hoechlin, who will play the Man of Steel, got his start as Superman/Clark Kent on Supergirl, playing the star’s cousin. After several appearances and fan interest, the new superhero show was created which will debut in 2021. Though it will detail the adventures of Superman as a hero and the challenges of being a husband and father while wearing tights, there could very well be an opening for some family visits.

Series regulars on The CW’s line of superhero shows have often left and returned as guest stars. Willa Holland left her regular role as Thea Queen on Arrow but returned in several episodes. Wally West, portrayed by Keiynan Lonsdale left The Flash but has popped up on the series since then.

While it would be quite different for the star of a canceled series to guest star on an ongoing show, it’s a subject that’s been talked about before after the cancellation of Arrow as rumor has it that The CW wants Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen/Green Arrow) to return for a guest star on the next big superhero crossover.

Could Supergirl and Superman team up in the future?

While the network isn’t opposed to bringing characters back into the fold even after they’ve left a series, so far, no actor has returned after cancellation on The CW, but that’s a minor detail considering Arrow was the first superhero show canceled by the network. And it just ended its run in January of this year.

While Benoist is certainly looking forward to spending some quality time with her baby boy and her family, unless she’s adamantly opposed to becoming Supergirl again, there’s no reason why she wouldn’t be welcome to share the screen with Tyler Hoechlin again.

In fact, one would think, after some time to rest and relax, Benoist would want to return to the role that has had such a major impact on young girls around the world, even if only briefly.
