NCIS Season 18 is in production: What we know so far
Everything we know about NCIS Season 18 so far
While there is still no word yet on when NCIS will return to our screens, we do know that production is underway on the popular CBS series. Since the cast and crew are returning to work on Season 18 after production was shut down early due to the pandemic, we wanted to take a look at what we know so far about the next season.
For starters, the current pandemic situation is confirmed to be part of the storyline, but not until later. Co-showrunner Steve Binder told TVLine “We’re in a pre-COVID world for a little while” when the season begins.

Taking place over multiple episodes, life for the agents pre-pandemic will have some semblance of normalcy. We will see Gibbs during a mission that he went on in early Season 17, in which he disappeared during the episode “Musical Chairs.” So when the show returns, we’re going back to that time period to see what the mission was all about.
Hey, we’ll take what we can get at this point! Can we go back to November with them as well? Living in a pre-COVID world with the NCIS crew seems like it would be a lot of fun!
NCIS will also say goodbye to Maria Bello in her role as Jack Sloane
Not only will the Gibbs of it all be addressed, but fans will also be saying goodbye to yet another character. For her exit, the showrunners wanted to make sure Sloane’s goodbye was “worthy” of who she was as a character. With her arc expected to be complete in eight episodes, fans are curious about how we will say goodbye to her, especially considering her budding relationship with Gibbs.
Personally, as long as she is one of the few characters who have exited without, ahem, dearly departing, then saying goodbye may hurt less than it would the other way around. If the door stays open for her return, then it would make for some fun plot lines down the road.
Speaking of plotlines, we don’t know much about any character arcs as of yet. However, at least one episode will push the show towards yet another huge milestone. Yes, that’s right, episode 400 is coming this season. Actor Wilmer Valderrama even teased the wrapping of the episode on his Instagram page.
All that is really known is episode 400 will involve flashbacks of Doctor Donald “Ducky” Mallard and Gibbs’ first meeting, according to TVGuide. Cardea teased their meeting came about due to “strange circumstances.” Given the interesting stories Ducky has had over his long life and Gibbs’s own background, fans are sure to be in for a treat.
The friendship between Ducky and Gibbs has been a constant of the series and seeing it play out is a dream come true.
There is plenty of excitement building for the new season and we’re looking forward to seeing what is in store for our favorite characters! What are you most excited for in Season 18?
As the cast goes back to work, there are sure to be more teasers that are released the closer we get. We’ll continue to keep you posted on NCIS related news as we learn more!
NCIS Season 18 will air Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS when it returns.
