Christina Braithwaite is Lovecraft Country’s biggest mystery. What is she after?

Lovecraft Country has kept its audience in suspense with its ability to blend sci-fi/fantasy horrors with Black Americans’ real-life horrors during the Jim Crow era. It is as poetic as it is unnerving, and allows the creators to delve further into the struggles of living in a segregated world. As we get closer to the end of the first season, we are just now seeing how the characters have started to unravel the directions of their journeys.

The latest episode titled “Jiga-a-Bobo” has changed the game entirely for everyone involved. Though it wasn’t much, Tic came back from the orrery’s time portal with valuable information about the future from his son’s novel, Lovecraft Country.

Forget about the Sons of Adam, Tic is now being propelled forward by his unborn child.  Even Tic’s father has signed on for a suicide mission, if need be, to protect his son and his future grandson. On the other hand, Leti is determined to make sure that nothing happens to Tic, especially since she is now being protected by a protective spell.

Despite finally getting some much-needed clarity so late in the season, there are still some unanswered questions. While we can bet that Hippolyta will return from the future as a woman in control of her destiny, the possibility that she will return by the end of the season is still up in the air. The orrery that could transport her back is damaged, so it’s unclear how she will make her return. Lastly, Christina Braithwaite’s looming presence signals that there is more to her than she is actually telling.

Is Christina really looking for immortality on Lovecraft Country?

One of the latest revelations that make Christina seem even more suspicious is that Tic revealed that his son wrote that Tic dies because Christina sacrifices him to become immortal during the autumnal equinox. It’s a curious reveal considering Christina’s final scene in the same episode.

Christina hires two men to beat her up and “kill” her in the same way that Emmet Till was murdered. The men toss her into the water with barbed wire wrapped around her neck, and Christina resurfaces unscathed except for a Sons of Adam symbol burning across her stomach.

If Christina has already learned to conquer death, what would be the point of going through with an immortality ritual? Christina’s mysterious and seemingly shady disposition makes the possibilities seem endless especially since she might be eviler than she seems.

Nevertheless, there are a few obvious ways that Christina’s endgame can play out. Maybe Tic’s son doesn’t have his facts straight in his novel or he purposely changed what happened in his stories. It wouldn’t be a far off idea considering that Tic already told his dad that his son changed many details in his novel.

Another possibility is that Christina has only been practicing a temporary spell for immortality and is looking to permanently live forever. Either way, Christina’s success is going to depend on Tic’s ability to stop her from tricking him into a position he won’t survive. The worst part is that Tic and the gang have five days to figure this stuff out and it looks like it’s going to take a group effort to save the day.
