It’s still a sad time for iZombie fans. After five seasons, the popular show unfortunately came to an end. It was announced in 2018 that the fan-favorite was being renewed for one last season. And expectedly, many people still really want to know why the popular series had to come to its close in 2019.

If you’re unfamiliar with the series, here’s the premise.

iZombie synopsis

iZombie follows the life of doctor-turned-zombie Olivia Moore as she continues to adjust to her new supernatural form. If her life wasn’t already complicated enough, she’s also a Seattle Police medical examiner helping solve murders along the way. Yikes!

The show ran on The CW and is now streamable on Netflix.

Why did iZombie end?

And here’s what we know about why iZombie was ultimately cancelled.

Apparently, the decision came down to dwindling viewership, although some still find that hard to believe. Screen Rant speculates that although the show did have a following, it just wasn’t as popular at the network’s other series, such as The Arrow and The Flash. The site also theorizes this could’ve been because iZombie isn’t a superhero show. But with the major success Riverdale has seen, we aren’t too convinced that’s why.

According to Distractify, the drop-off in viewers didn’t stop iZombie from growing into a well-received series by critics and fans over the years. It was even nominated for a few Teen Choice Awards, including in the “Breakout Show” and “TV Star: Female” categories.

Even though iZombie’s fan-base kept the show alive, they couldn’t stop the series from getting the axe in the end. Showrunner Rob Thomas tried to do right by the show’s fans all the way up to that fateful, final curtain call. He told Variety ahead of the final season, “It’s a lovely bow at the end of the season” adding, “We will answer all of the big, long-term arc questions.”

As expected with a big finale, not everyone agreed with the “lovely bow” at the end of iZombie, even if many of the questions were indeed answered, as the showrunner promised. The reality is, the fans who weren’t part of that lack of viewership just weren’t ready to see the CW series end.

Luckily, all five seasons of iZombie are available on Netflix. We’d advise you get to binging, if you haven’t already!
