TV ratings: Coroner up from series premiere, The Masked Singer down [Oct. 7]
A breakdown of the live TV ratings from Wednesday, Oct. 7
Wednesday, Oct. 7 brought a mixture of content. While new episodes aired to start the night, the second half was taken up by the Vice Presidential Debate. It’s time to breakdown the live TV ratings for the night.
Let’s start with the debate. All four biggest networks aired it, with ABC winning in both the demo and total audience. ABC pulled in 8.29 million viewers and a 1.9 demo rating. NBC was next with 5.60 million viewers and a 1.3 demo rating. Then it was FOX in terms of the demo with a 1.1 rating but CBS came third in the total audience with 4.60 million viewers.
ABC did have a debate special in the hour before, which may have affected the total viewers. After all, those interested just in the debate would have wanted to see the before-debate special. In total, 4.89 million people tuned in for it with a demo rating of 0.9.
How did the new episodes fare in the TV ratings?
Now let’s turn to the new episodes. The CW had two premieres, first Devils aired its series premiere and second Coroner debuted its second season.
More from Ratings
- Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy up, Walker Independence down
- Wednesday TV ratings: One Chicago mixed, Kung Fu down (November 9)
- Tuesday TV ratings: The Resident and Monarch down (November 8)
- Monday TV ratings: All American down, Quantum Leap up (Nov. 7)
- Weekend live TV ratings: Fire Country and FBI mixed
Devils is the new Patrick Dempsey drama described as a financial thriller. Would Grey’s Anatomy fans tune in to see their favorite neurosurgeon? In the end, 0.62 million people tuned in and the show got a 0.1 demo rating. It currently sits in sixth out of eight shows aired so far. Three shows still need to air premieres for the fall TV season.
Will Devils survive another season? There are a few things at play here. It’s only the series premiere, so we’re expecting a drop next week. After that, TV ratings should stabilize to help us assess the chances of renewal. Secondly, the show was likely to be put in the summer had The CW not opted for a pandemic-proof fall, which is where lower ratings are more acceptable. Thirdly, The CW is used to lower ratings.
While Devils premiered on the lower side, Coroner Season 2 premiered with higher/steady ratings compared to the series premiere 10 weeks ago. It sits in fifth place for the network right now.
Coroner is a Canadian acquisition, and the Canadian show is currently filming its third season. The show will get away with lower ratings than normal, but being up from the series premiere is certainly a good sign.
FOX, CBS, and NBC all aired new episodes of shows in the 8/7c timeslot. The Masked Singer won the night in terms of normal programming, pulling in 5.72 million viewers and a 1.4 demo rating, but it was down 17% and 26% respectively from the previous episode.
Weakest Link was down by 9% in the audience but steady in the demo. There’s nothing to worry about just yet. Meanwhile, Big Brother was steady in the audience but down 10% in the demo. This is Big Brother, so it is cheaper to make, but could this be a sign things need to start changing?
