A breakdown of the live TV ratings on Thursday, Oct. 15

It was a mixed night for live TV ratings on Thursday, Oct. 15. Part of that was likely linked to the Town Hall events on both ABC and NBC. It’s time to break down the results.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump went head to head with Town Hall events on competing networks. Biden’s was set soon after the Presidential Debate was canceled, while NBC faced criticism for going up against NBC with its own Town Hall.

In the end, Joe Biden’s event one the night. It had 12.71 million people with a 2.6 demo rating across the two hour event. The NBC event did come in second, with 10.39 million viewers and a 1.7 demo rating. However, that event only went on for an hour, with NBC airing new episodes of Connecting… and Dateline. ABC had a rerun of Emergency Call in the 10/9c slot.

Due to the Trump Town Hall event in the hour before, Connecting did see a 46% increase in the audience and 66% increase in the demo for its first episode. That dropped by 49% and 60% respectively for the second episode of the night. Dateline was slightly more regular, with a 7% loss in the audience but a steady demo.

FOX had the MLB Baseball throughout the night. It didn’t hold up against the debates, pulling in 2.5 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating.

The live TV ratings for The Outpost, Supernatural, and more

Now onto the new episodes of TV shows. CBS had a new episode of Big Brother up against the Town Hall events. It didn’t fare too badly, losing just 2.5% of its audience and 10% of its demo from its previous Thursday night episode. The ratings are still good enough that we’ll likely get another season of Big Brother. Whether it’s another All-Stars season is debatable.

Star Trek: Discovery then aired new in the last slot of the night. This was up 2% in the audience and 50% in the demo. Like previous weeks, the TV ratings for the series don’t matter too much. CBS has already gained plenty from it being on CBS All Access. This is purely pandemic programming while we wait for November and shows like NCIS Season 18 to premiere.

The CW saw mixed results. Supernatural was down after returning up last week. Part of this will be due to the Town Hall programming. The show lost 9% of its audience and 25% of its demo. It remains the strongest show on the network for the 2020-2021 season so far, and the audience numbers are still over the million.

The Outpost performed well. Remaining steady in the demo, it pulled in a 37% increase in the total audience. This is still low at 0.63 million, but this isn’t anything to worry about for The CW. The ratings tend to be on the lower side, and we already know there are 13 more episodes coming.
