HBO’s latest horror-drama series Lovecraft Country came to an end last night, and the finale surely left us with more questions than we anticipated. Without giving away any spoilers, new plot points were introduced in the episode, and loose ends regarding our favorite characters were not all tied up.

Though Lovecraft Country has not been renewed for season 2 yet, we’re hopeful we can get more from this awesome show. Whether or not there will be another installment, however, fans might have a few questions about season 1 that we can clear up.

Confused about who exactly a certain character is or why dreams and flashbacks were used so heavily throughout season 1? We’ve got you. Here’s everything you should know about the character Hanna.

Who is Lovecraft Country’s Hanna?

From the start of

the show

, protagonist Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) often sees a woman running out of a burning building in his dreams. Viewers learn that he’s seeing his ancestor Hanna, who was a slave of Titus Braithwhite’s in the 1800s. When the

Sons of Adam Lodge

burned down, she managed to escape, also stealing the magical Book of Names.

We learn early on in

the series

that Atticus is actually a descendant of Titus Braithwhite, because Titus had sexual relations with Hanna and got her pregnant. This is why Atticus is wanted by Samuel and Christina Braithwhite—they want to use his blood for their own magic.

Later on in the season, even Letitia Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) starts having dreams of Hanna running out of the burning building. Together, she and Atticus use the imagery in the dream to realize that Hanna had the Book of Names, and along with Montrose Freeman (Michael Kenneth Williams), they go back in time to find it.
