TV ratings: Final Presidential Debate, Supernatural, TNF and more [Oct. 22]
A breakdown of the live TV ratings for Thursday, Oct. 22
The CW opted for regular programming up against Thursday Night Football and the final Presidential Debate. It’s time to see how everything performed on Thursday, Oct. 22 in the live TV ratings.
We’ll start with Thursday Night Football on FOX. It won the night in the demo, which isn’t all that surprising. However, it couldn’t quite win in the total audience. That win went to one of the networks airing the final Presidential Debate.
The football certainly took a knock because of the debate, though. That’s not all too surprising and we’ll likely see the football back over 10 million views next Thursday.
ABC, CBS, and NBC went head-to-head for the debate
All three of the big networks aired the final Presidential Debate, with programming afterward to break it all down. While the debate didn’t start until 9/8c, ABC and NBC both had special programming beforehand. It was football that won in the first timeslot.

- Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy up, Walker Independence down

- Tuesday TV ratings: The Resident and Monarch down (November 8)
- Monday TV ratings: All American down, Quantum Leap up (Nov. 7)

ABC beat NBC though in the audience. Their demo ratings were the same.
When it came to the debate from 9/8c, ABC won the night in the live audience, pulling in 9.46 million viewers. NBC was second with 8.71 million, suggesting that the pre-debate coverage was a good idea. Both networks pulled in a 2.1 demo rating.
CBS was behind both. After a new episode of Big Brother, which was steady in the demo and up in the total audience compared to the previous Thursday episode, viewers didn’t turn to CBS for debate coverage. It pulled in 4.79 million viewers, almost half of what NBC pulled in. The demo rating was at 1.1.
The CW performed okay in the live TV ratings
It’s not surprising to hear that The CW shows didn’t perform spectacularly considering they were up against debates and football. However, they did perform okay.
Supernatural dropped below the million mark in viewership, but that’s not too much of a concern. 1) the show is ending in four episodes and 2) it was up against the special coverage and the football.
The Outpost dipped 21% in the total audience and was steady in the demo. The dip isn’t concerning. The CW has already picked up another 13 episodes. That dip will have been directly linked to the debate coverage.
