Watch the two-hour Season 5 premiere of This Is Us live on NBC

The wait is finally over. After an extended hiatus due to the pandemic, This Is Us returns to NBC tonight at 9 PM with a special two-hour season premiere. Like with the previous four seasons, the opening episode of the fifth season revolves around The Big Three’s birthday as the trio turns 40.

In the Season 4 finale, the feud between Kevin and Randall came to a heated conclusion after Kevin mentioned that the worst day of his life occurred when Jack and Rebecca brought Randall home from the hospital.

This schism between the brothers will be a major storyline this season. In the trailer, Randall is celebrating his 40th birthday with Beth and the children while Kevin and Kate celebrate at the cabin. However, the final clip teases Randall’s arrival at the cabin, where Kevin begrudgingly greets him at the door.

According to This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, two of the biggest themes for Season 5 are “births and rebirths.” One of those births will most certainly belong to Kevin and Madison, who are expecting twins. Another birth could belong to Kate and Toby, who will explore adoption and eventually adopt the newest member of the family, a daughter named Hailey.

Speaking of the Pearson family, Rebecca’s health will be a major factor in the fifth season. Against Kevin’s wishes, Rebecca decided to appease Randall and sign up for the drug trials in St. Louis to fight her neurological issues. Unfortunately, thanks to a flash-forward, either the trials failed or Rebecca left early because her memory significantly declines by the time of the 40th birthday party.

This Is Us Season 5 premiere details

The Season 5 premiere will include not one, but two episodes as This Is Us will run for two hours tonight instead of one. This Is Us will also tackle current day topics such as the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. In the teaser clip, Kevin wears a mask and stands six feet away while talking to Kate, which mirrors what’s currently happening across the world.
