TV ratings: Superstore, The Outpost, Press Your Luck, and more [Oct. 29]
A breakdown of the live broadcast TV ratings for Thursday, Oct. 29
What do Superstore, The Outpost, and Press Your Luck all have in common? They all had new episodes airing on Thursday, Oct. 29. It’s time to take a look at how they all performed in the live TV ratings.
We’ll start with FOX, which had Thursday Night Football again. The numbers were up from the previous week, with eight million people tuning in. The demo remained the same at a 2.2 rating. It’s not like FOX is going to choose to lose TNF, though, as the numbers were the best of the whole night.
CBS had mostly a night of reruns and a special. That special was Every Vote Counts: A Celebration, which pulled in 1.38 million viewers and a 0.2 demo rating. The only new episode was Star Trek: Discovery, which was down 25% and 33% in the audience and demo respectively. Don’t worry about this show, though. It’s a CBS All Access show and has already been renewed for a fourth season. It’s being used for pandemic programming and that’s it.
Superstore premieres on NBC
NBC is starting up its usual fall programming. This Is Us premiered last week and this week we get the premiere of Superstore. It’s a week later than initially planned, but we’ll take it.
More from Ratings
- Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy up, Walker Independence down
- Wednesday TV ratings: One Chicago mixed, Kung Fu down (November 9)
- Tuesday TV ratings: The Resident and Monarch down (November 8)
- Monday TV ratings: All American down, Quantum Leap up (Nov. 7)
- Weekend live TV ratings: Fire Country and FBI mixed
Unfortunately, Superstore was down by 3% in the audience and 20% in the demo compared to the Season 5 premiere. It was also down from the Season 5 finale. This is common, so it’s nothing to worry about. In fact, the audience drop isn’t that big. We’ll see how the show steadies once America Ferrera leaves.
The night was good for NBC after this. Connecting… was up in the audience and Dateline was up in both. There’s no doubt that Dateline will likely be renewed. Connecting… is on the line, but could be a benefit for off-season programming.
The CW had mixed results during the night. Supernatural was down 33% in the demo to 0.2. However, it was steady in the total audience. This was for a big episode of the season, though. While the show is ending, we want to see it end on a high, right?
The Outpost was up in the total audience by 11% and was steady in the demo. We already know there will be 13 new episodes to the season, which will likely feel like a fourth season to many.
ABC has a good night in the live TV ratings
Finally, it’s all about ABC. Things started with Celebrity Family Feud, which was up 59% in the total audience and steady in the demo. It claimed the top spot of the night outside of the football, so ABC will be happy with that.
That was followed by the Press Your Luck season finale, which was up 8% in the audience and 20% in the demo, winning the timeslot in both. There were a lot of prizes handed out. I’d say that the show will be renewed. The fall run hasn’t been too far behind the summer run. This is a good show for the off-season and works great when reruns are needed. It’s also cheaper than scripted programming to produce.
ABC then finished with Match Game, which was up 11% in the audience and steady in the demo. It won the timeslot in both metrics. Like Press Your Luck, there’s no need to get rid of the series when off-season programming is needed. This is a good option.
