The five moments from the Chicago Fire Season 9 premiere that stood out the most

Caution: There are spoilers from the Chicago Fire Season 9 premiere.

Chicago Fire Season 9 premiered in the middle of the pandemic. After all, it didn’t have a huge cliffhanger to open up with from the previous season.

We immediately met Gianna Mackey (pronounced Mackie not Mac-Key), who has a connection to Cruz. The two grew up in the same neighborhood. That wouldn’t cause a problem, though, except for Cruz being like a big brother to her.

Despite being in the middle of a pandemic, much of the episode felt like a normal Chicago Fire episode. That led to these WTF moments throughout.

Girls on Fire or Girls on Ice?

Because of the pandemic, Stella’s excellent program, “Girls on Fire,” risked being shut down. That’s not surprising. We’ve faced a lot of recreational activities shut down because of this pandemic.

Stella wasn’t going to let it go without a fight. While the city was worried about liability, she was worried about the girls who need a program like this. She had everything in place to make sure they could do the program in a socially distant way and it would be all outside.

Boden delivered the good news, so this is definitely one of those good WTF moments. Girls on Fire is still hot.

Working under pressure

Gianna got an immediate taste of the dangers of being a first responder. However, it wasn’t a normal day on the job. Brett and Gianna attend an overdose, and just as they’re about to get to work, a guy shows up and puts a gun to Brett’s head.

The guy is the OD victim’s brother. He orders them to save his brother’s life. Well, that’s what they were going to try to do!

Brett manages to immediately take charge. She remains calm throughout.

The man dies while at Chicago Med, which means the brother has his eyes set on Brett for revenge. That leads to Casey staying at Brett’s apartment for the night.

The questionable Australian accents

Brett and Casey decide to play a guessing game. They have to do accents, and Casey says he’s terrible at them.

When he gets Australian, naturally a lot of Chicago Fire fans would have been waiting to hear Jesse Spencer use his natural accent. Well, he proved that Casey is bad at accents putting on a terrible Australian accent.

It’s not as bad as Brett’s attempt, though, which sounded more cockney than Australian. Maybe she was attempting Karl Urban’s accent from The Boys.

Stella using her initiative

It wouldn’t be the Chicago Fire Season 9 premiere without something big happening. That came from the big callout of the episode. It was in a gallery, which meant the place was prime to go up in flames quickly, and there were a lot of people in the building.

As Firehouse 51 gets to work, there’s an explosion. Severide is trapped under shelves and Stella can’t get to him. She finds a way to him by smashing a statue through the drywall. It’s just the initiative needed to save Severide’s bacon, and he even tells Boden that.

Boden encourages Stella to take the lieutenant’s test the next time it comes up. And Severide is completely on board with that.

I hope that’s the way this stays. Please let us have a storyline where a man is not threatened by his girlfriend’s success. There are men out there like that, and we need TV to remember that.

The ambulance crash

The Chicago Fire Season 9 premiere ended with another callout. This time it’s just Amublance 61 for a wellness check.

It wouldn’t lead to an actual wellness check, though. You know it all links back to the earlier part of the episode. There’s an accident and the amublance is flipped on its side with our paramedics inside.

What a start to Gianna’s time at Firehouse 51.

We’re left with our two paramedic’s fate unknown. I’m sure they’re going to be okay, but it’s going to knock their confidence.
